Eye Infections.

This weeks blog comes directly from Dr Smith and is about gritty eye infection which is quite common.

A dry gritty eye is often a sign of a dry eye and much less common in men than in women. Often the eyes become infected and a good remedy to prevent infection is the use of a quality artificial eye drop used as often during the day as is needed. Good nutrition, which means a diet full of the correct amount of protein fat and carbohydrates is required but also especially over the age of 55 years of vitamin supplement is a really good idea. Consider asking a nutritionist about healthy meal ideas. Often this saves taking out the cookbook and keeps the required list of ingredients to the minimum necessary, thus avoiding waste or worse still, overeating.

More on eye infections at a later date.

See you next time

Food Cravings

This week at The Roseville Clinic we’re looking at food cravings. Let’s face it, we all have them and most of the time we tend to give in. Mostly we’ll go for sugar to satiate a craving. Chocolate is the first “go to” choice for most of us because it’s quick and readily available.

Sometimes we seek a sugar hit because we’re genuinely hungry and don’t make time to eat due to busy lifestyles. However most of the time our cravings are based purely on seeking a pleasure rush.

Intense research by Neuroscientists at Reading University show what happens to the brain when you eat sugar based foods, and through their findings it appears that parts of the brain are indeed susceptible to seeking out reward.

It would be easy to say “well that’s it then, it’s a chemical reaction beyond my control” but there are ways in which we can combat cravings.

By eating regularly and having the right levels of nutrients in our diet is one way of combatting cravings. Drinking plenty of water (as occasionally we’re thirsty and not hungry) is another way. Ensuring we get a good night’s sleep is crucial. That way our body then won’t react by seeking out something sweet as a way to increase blood sugar. Mindfulness is important also by being aware that with certain techniques, sugar cravings can pass in a short period of time.

and according to our own in house medical surgeon Dr Smith…

Dr Smith says,

Dopamine is a neuro transmitter which is released in the brain after ingesting sugar, and it stimulates the pleasure centre, giving us a “natural high” and making us “feel good.” Excess stimulation of our pleasure and reward system, can be a contributory factor in food  addiction.”

The Importance of Water

Tip of the Week…

This week we’re focusing on the importance of water in diet. Since 70% of our body is made up of water it is crucial to drink between 2-3litres daily. Water flushes toxins from our body, assists in poor digestion, combats headaches and is great for constipation. It improves our cognitive performance and our ability to concentrate. From a weight management perspective it is an essential component as it pushes sugars from the body quicker and is a great filler for those times when we crave foods. Also, believe it or not we occasionally mistake hunger for thirst.

and according to our own in house medical surgeon Dr Smith…

Dr Smith says,
As a facial and aesthetic surgeon I cannot stress the importance of water in our diet enough. Not only from a health perspective, but externally also as its effect on our skin can be dramatic. It plumps up and nourishes skin and helps to efficiently regenerate skin cells.”

Real Life Stories

One of our current clients had this to say about her weight loss journey with Martina:
I was in denial about the creeping weight gain I had experienced. It took my impending wedding to make me address the weight gain properly and decide to make a change. Martina helped me do this, week by week and by the wedding I was over two and a half stone lighter than I had been at my heaviest. I had my dress made to measure and at each fitting I became more and more confident and happier with it as I got slimmer and healthier.
Martina’s approach was supportive and enthusiastic and even on the weeks I didn’t feel I had done my best, I left our sessions knowing I could make this change and feeling positive. I’m still seeing Martina because I have new weight goals now and I want to keep going!
